Women’s Suffrage Anniversary Event
On August 26th, 2020, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Kikthawenund Chapter, Anderson, Indiana, marched downtown, past the Anderson City Building to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution which guaranteed women the right to vote. Several members dressed in white, the symbolic color of the suffragists and carried signs during the reenactment. After the march, the women were guests for a Tour and Garden Party at the Historic Gruenewald House at 626 Main Street, Anderson, Indiana. Greeting the women were Board President David Cagley, portraying Martin Gruenewald and Lessa Johnson, portraying Martin’s daughter Augusta Gruenewald. All were wearing masks due to the COVID-19 precautions, which was also period accurate because of the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918. House Director LaBella Wallace hosted the group and Master Gardener Loretta Heiniger, along with helpers, drew participants’ attention to the beautiful flowers in the Heirloom Garden. Refreshments included eclairs, lemonade and root beer — all available in 1920.
Madison County Bicentennial Celebration 2023
The Gruenewald Historic House, 626 Main Street in Anderson, Indiana celebrated the 200 year anniversary of Madison County on the afternoon of Sunday, October 1, 2023 with an Open House and Garden Party. This 1923 re-enactment commemorated the “Centennial” of Madison County when the Gruenewald family lived in the House. Board members and other participants dressed in 1920s attire and live musical entertainment featured popular 1920s music. Free tickets were distributed for a short downtown ride on the Anderson Trolley. Visitors 21+ were invited to continue the celebration at the Cultured Urban Winery “Speakeasy” at 1013 Meridian Street in Anderson and were provided a “password” for entrance where Roaring ‘20s “beverages” were available for purchase. The celebration was a 1920s roaring good time!
